Winner of:
The 1997 Ethics in Business Award
“Praised for Code of Conduct that Emphasize Honesty & Fairness. “
The Better Business Bureau
Rip-offs in the construction industry and home remodeling business rank annually
as the second or third most reported complaint to the Better Business Bureau of Utah,
according to President Bill Beadle. Yet both winners of the 1997 Ethics in Business
Award, created by the Better Business Bureau - come from those industries. Builders
Choice Remodeling Co. and Chung and Associates, Inc. - have strong traditions of
ethical standards.
Dale Bradley, chairman of the Better Business Bureau of Utah, said
at a presentation luncheon on Thursday, the awards "celebrate what's right with the
enterprise system".
One of the winners ways that honestly and integrity must start
at the top - with the owner. While the other has taken aggressive steps to educate
and warn the public about the contractor fraud.
Steve Rasmason, president of Builders
Choice Remodeling Co. of Salt Lake City, says his ethical standards are a carryover
from his commercial construction and the examples set by ethical contractors. Mr.
Rasmason won the Category 1! Award, for businesses with up to 20 employees.
Builders
Choice has an educational campaign called "Don't Get Soaked" - a 15 point checklist
of items to protect consumers from construction fraud. It has received national attention.
Before
engaging the services of a construction company, the brochure suggests questions
consumers should ask. Does the company have a service department? Is it licensed?
Does it have a general waiver of lien? Will it warrant that the finished product
will be in accordance with established codes and standards? Does it supply a list
of references? AND is it accessible 24 hours a day, 365 days a year?
Rasmason was
prompted to start the campaign "because I had heard so many bad things about remodeling
contractors and wanted to make a positive contribution to the industry".

Last year Builders Choice was one of 50 companies in the United States selected for
it's high standards of excellence by Remodeling magazine.
One customer praised Builders
Choice for a project that was "completed in record time and the quality of the work
is excellent". Another thanked Rasmason's sales representative for "being on time
for his appointment, being well prepared and returning with a quote as promised".

"Tribute to the best in the Industry"
Qualified Remodeler Magazine Sep. 1995
September's Top 500 Leaders listing, Qualified Remodeler's tribute to the best in
the remodeling industry, is always a popular feature. This year, as in years past,
QR is proud to recognize these companies for their outstanding business accomplishments.
We'd also like to thank them for their willingness to share vital information about
their business operations with others in the industry, something not every company
is willing to do.
The information provided by these Top 500 Leaders gives us a profile
of the remodeling contractor - who he or she is, how long the company has been in
business, what types of projects are typically being done, what products are being
specified and/or purchased for those projects and where these building materials
and products are being purchased.
In addition, we learn how many employees remodeling
companies have, whether or not they have a design department and/or a showroom and
which associations are most helpful to the remodeler's business.
Congratulations to
this year's Top 500 Leaders!
